TIRUNELVELI: As the fast-unto-death of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) coordinator S P Udyakumar and his associate Pushparayan entered the second day, the police cordoned off Idinthakarai, on Tuesday. Over 1,000 fishermen extended their support to the fast. Though the police managed to arrest six supporters of PMANE, they were finding it difficult to reach the Saint Lourde Madha Church fast venue at Idinthakarai, where villagers, including large number of women, extended moral support to the fast and literally gave protection to Udayakumar. When Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police Vijayendra S Bidari called Udayakumar over phone and asked him to surrender, he made the conversation public by keeping the phone near the public address system. Meanwhile, around 20 police vehicles approached the border areas of Idinthakarai village in the evening, but they retreated immediately. The villagers have deployed 250 youth equipped with whistle and torch light along the village border to alert their leaders on the police entry into Idinthakarai. They have already blocked the roads leading to Idinthakarai village.“Udaykumar and his associates, such as Pushparayan, Jesuraj, Milton, Jeyakumar, Sahaya Enitha and Jerold and others are staying at Idinthakarai and are instigating the innocent public to indulge in agitation,” said a senior police officer.Additional DGP, (Law and Order) S George visited Koodankulam and is supervising the security measures.
