His resume would have been enviable, had he ever made one. Cinematographer V Babasaheb, who worked on iconic Bollywood films that spanned over six decades, such as, 'Seema', 'Daag', 'Baadal', 'Aap Ki Kasam', 'Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka', 'Ganga Jumna' and 'Akhir Kyon', passed away on Saturday morning at his hometown, Miraj, near Sangli, in Maharashtra. He was 97 years old.
Babasaheb received no acclaim, and very little recognition throughout his lifetime. And that is what he wanted, as he always shied away from any kind of publicity.
Babasaheb began his career with a job at a telephone company, which required him to dig holes to get telephone poles fixed, from Miraj to Pune in the late '30s. In Pune, he was taken under the wing of E Mohammed, a noted cameraman of his time, who was working with the famous Prabhat Studio in the early 40s.
His first film was 'Girls School', in 1948, directed by Amiya Chakravarty, director, screenwriter and producer of films such as, 'Daag', 'Patita' and 'Jwar Bhata'. He later worked on films such as 'Gauna' (1949), starring Usha Kiran, 'Badal' (1951) starring Madhubala and Prem Nath, and 'Daag' (1952) starring Dilip Kumar and Nimmi.
He left Mumbai as well as the film industry due to the ill health of his wife and his own cataract operation.
