The saffron party BJP registered the best ever performance in Uttar Pradesh in 2014. Despite 42% of the voters, that comprise Dalits, Yadavs and Muslims who are not considered the natural supporters of the BJP, the party managed to secure 73 seats for itself.
The party with a vote share of 42.3% managed to garner 34318576 votes in its favour in the Lok Sabha elections. The Samajwadi Party stood second with 1,59,14,019 votes that, as per reports, could easily carve out Muslim votes from Mayawati's vote bank.
Mayawati's BSP, that stood third in the state, secured one-fifth of the total votes cast. In a state that was entirely swayed by the Modi wave, NOTA was an option for only a few. Only 0.7 per cent voters preferred NOTA.
At a press conference in Lucknow, Mayawati told media that the upper caste and Muslims were misled during the elections and most of the Muslim votes went to the Samajwadi Party despite the Muzaffarnagar riots.
Almost 50 per cent of the ballots in Uttar Pradesh were cast in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party that made a stunning comeback in the state. The BJP has clinched victory in 73 seats by surpassing its highest tally of 58 seats in the state which brought the NDA government to power in 1998.
Massive victory margin
The party gained unassailable leads in most of the constituencies and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi led Aam Aadmi Party's chief Arvind kejriwal in Varanasi by 3.37 lakh votes.
BJP president Rajnath Singh broke the record of victory margin held by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Rajnath Singh trounced Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi by a margin of 2.72 lakh votes. He got 5.61 lakh votes over Joshi's 2.88 lakh.
The family face savers
Samajwadi Party's victory on five seats has proved to be a major face-saver for the ruling party. The ruling Samajwadi Party won only those five seats from where Mulayam Singh and his family members contested.
Yadav himself won from both Azamgarh and Mainpuri seats, daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav won from Kannauj and nephews Dharmedra Yadav and Akshay Yadav won from Badaun and Firozabad seats respectively.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi were the only face savers for the party in Uttar pradesh after securing the Amethi and Rae Bareiilly seats. The Congress, which won 22 seats in 2009, shrunk to only the Gandhis' pocket boroughs of Rae Bareli, where its President Sonia Gandhi won by a margin of 3.52 lakh votes, and Amethi from where Rahul Gandhi took a hefty lead of one lakh votes.
How Uttar Pradesh voted in 2009
The most politically-charged state during elections with total 80 Lok Sabha seats had witnessed 47.8 per cent turnout in 2009 general elections. The Samajwadi Party was a great winner with victory in 23 seats. The Bahujan Samaj Party, despite garnering 27.4 per cent of total votes, could win only 20 seats. The biggest loser in 2009 in UP was the NDA that fielded candidates in 78 seats but won only in 15.
