Sri Paramhans ashram seer Mauni Mahraj was on Tuesday placed under house arrest along with his followers when he tried to leave for Ayodhya to take part in the VHP yatra, which has been banned by the UP government.
Peethasheewar Mauni Mahraj, 35 to 40 sadhus and about 500 others were placed under house arrest in his Gauriganj situated ashram this morning," Assistant Superintendent of Police P Munna Lal said. The administration had told Mauni Mahraj that he would not be allowed to leave the ashram when he announced yesterday that he would be going to Ayodhya, the ASP said.
Personnel of Provincial Armed Constabulary and police have been deployed in strength around the ashram as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, sources in the ashram said that Mauni Mahraj has started a fast unto death in protest against the denial of permission to proceed to Ayodhya.
