Patna: A video showing the attack on Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s cavalcade by villagers in Buxar district surfaced on Saturday, showing large stones and bricks being pelted on the cars and injuring his personal staff and a few policemen.
The mob managed to breach the CM’s security cordon, shattered the windows of the cars and even pounced on them as the convoy passed through a narrow road in Nandan village on Friday. While Kumar managed to escape unharmed, the incident has raised question marks over his security considering how easily some villagers mounted the attack.
The policemen accompanying the CM for his Vikas Sameeksha Yatra had retaliated strongly by lathicharging the protesters, it took them a long time to control the situation.
On Saturday, the police took out a flag march in the village and inspected the location where the convoy was attacked. Patna zone’s IG Nayyar Hasnain Khan and Magadh division commissioner Anand Kishor have been tasked to investigate the security lapse.
“Strict action will be taken against those found responsible for lapses in the security arrangement. We will conclude our investigation soon," Anand Kishor told News18.
Many functionaries of Nitish’s Janata Dal (United), who were accompanying him during his yatra in Buxar, blamed the district administration for not making proper arrangements. It is learnt that higher officials of Buxar may face the heat.
Kumar’s personal secretary Dinesh Rai and public relation officer VK Shukla were among those injured in the stone pelting. They returned back to Patna on Friday night. Talking to News18, they said the attack was pre-planned and could have been averted if the district administration had done their homework.
The chief minister, meanwhile, decided to continue his yatra and inaugurated several developmental projects in Sasaram district on Saturday. He said “anti-development forces" were behind the attack.
The incident has also taken a political turn as leader of opposition in Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, accused Nitish of trying to divert attention from development to irrelevant issues. JD(U) spokesman Sanjay Singh said that Tejashwi ‘s tweet indicated his party was behind the attack on the CM.
However the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) strongly rebutted charges against its leader and blamed growing frustration among public arising out of alleged mis-governance for the incident.
