CHENNAI: Accepting the recommendation of the Privileges Committee of the State Assembly, Speaker D Jayakumar on Thursday suspended Leader of Opposition and DMDK founder Vijayakant for 10 days from the proceedings of the House. The 10 days include three days in the current session and seven days in the next session. Along with members of the DMDK, members of the DMK, CPI and CPM staged a walk-out protesting the denial of permission by the Speaker to express their views on Vijayakant’s suspension.During the period of suspension, Vijayakant cannot avail of any of the benefits, salary and concessions allowed for the Leader of Opposition as well as the member of the House. However, the Speaker spared other DMDK members with a warning that they should, in future, not misuse their privilege as members of the House and should safeguard the dignity and decorum of the House besides avoiding recurrence of a situation that prevailed on February 1 wherein the DMDK members hindered the proceedings of the Assembly. The Speaker also warned that if the DMDK members engaged in similar acts in the future, severe action would be taken against them.As the Speaker was reading out the recommendation of the Privileges Committee, Deputy Leader of Opposition Panruti S Ramachandran, DMK floor leader MK Stalin, his deputy, Durai Murugan, leaders of CPI and CPM were on their feet requesting the Chair to let them to express their views.
