NAMAKKAL: In a shocking move, close on the heels of six child marriages being performed in Jambumadai, the elders of the hamlet have decided to ostracise people who leaked information to officials and others at a meeting held in the front of a temple in the village. Attended by more than 200 villagers, including women, the meeting began at 9.30 am and continued till 10.45 am, informed sources told Express. At the meeting, convened by ‘Pudhupoosari’, head priest and head of the elders, former panchayat president Balusamy, announced the decision to ostracise the person or family who or which leaked information on child marriages, sources said.Two child marriages were held on June 7 and the remaining on June 12 in the hamlet. Though revenue and police officials tried to stop the marriages, the villagers conducted the ceremonies in a hurry.Police have registered cases against parents of five minor daughters, who were married off. Police said that they did not register case against the parents of one of the girls as they produced a medical certificate stating that she had attained 18 years.
