UDUPI: Thousands of people flocked to the temple town of Udupi to participate in the Vitla Pindi celebrated at the Car Street of Sri Krishna Temple on Monday afternoon.Vitla Pindi, also called Mosaru Kudike Uthsava or Srikrishna Leelotsava, marks the the celebration of the childhood pranks of Lord Krishna.According to tradition, the Mrithika Murthy (clay idol) of Lord Krishna was worshiped in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. It was later taken in a golden palanquin on a special rath.Paryaya Shiroor Mutt pontiff Laxmivara Theertha installed the Mrithika Murthy on the rath and offered poojas. Devotees pulled the chariot through Car Street from 2.50 pm. Adamaru Mutt pontiff Vishwapriya Theertha Swamiji accompanied Laxmivara Theertha on the rath.Laxmivara Theertha distributed sweetmeats as prasadam from the rath to the thronging mass of devotees. Goodies such as coins, caps and T-shirts with Krishna pictures were also distributed to the devotees.Once the chariot completed a full circle around Car Street, Laxmivara Theertha immersed the clay idol in the nearby Madhwa Sarowar.The major attraction of the festivities was the ceremonial breaking of milk pots popularly called ‘Mosaru kudike’.Earthen pots filled with milk and milk products were hung on 17 makeshift high mast towers at different places. Temple employees dressed as gollas broke the pots using long sticks.Several cultural troupes such as hulivesha kunitha, music bands, dollu kunitha, pata kunitha among others escorted the chariot. Renowned drummer A Shivamani and his band performed around Car Street and were an added attraction to the celebrations.Hulivesha performers were honoured by the pontiff with garlands of currency notes of Rs 1000 each, while other cultural troupe members received garlands of currency notes worth Rs 500.
