New Delhi: The intimidating Indian opener Virender Sehwag found a famous admirer on Thursday when Sir Vivian Richards regarded him as the most destructive batsman of the modern era.
During a promotional event in New Delhi for the ICC World Cup 2011, Richards was asked who among Chris Gayle, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Adam Gilchrist and Sehwag is closest to him when it comes to power hitting that the West Indian was known for during his prime.
“The latter (Sehwag). There is no doubt about it. He is just so destructive. He is totally fearless. India need him badly (for the World Cup),” said Sir Viv.
“He can be very intimidating and can provide magnificent starts to the team which will play a big role in India’s success in the World Cup,” he added.
Also present on the occasion was former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan who felt that Inzamam-ul-Haq took that mantle from Richards.
“Viv was the most naturally gifted batsman against fast bowlers I have ever seen. But if someone asks me who after Viv, I would say Inzamam,” said the only World Cup-winning Pakistan skipper.
Two more World-Cup winning captains from the subcontinent – India’s Kapil Dev and Sri Lanka’s Arjuna Ranatunga – were also present at the function where new plans and initiatives for the World Cup were announced.
The quadrennial event will be jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and will start on February 19 next year.
