CHENNAI: A summer camp organised by British Council, Mount Road, ended recently with children of the age group of 8-15 years performing numerous plays for their parents. The theme of this year’s camp on spoken and written English was ‘Our World’ and the plays were based on the countries, its cultures and people which the children learnt during the programme. The event started with Stephen Roman, Regional Director, south asia, British Council, giving the opening address. The first play of the evening was What a wonderful world. It focussed on the disasters that might happen if the characters in the play continue to be nonchalant on destroying the natural resources and environment. The audience, comprising parents and wards, went on a comical ride with the next play, The Duke of Teynampet. An honest cobbler, his ambitious daughter, a narcissist actor and the Royal family of England made up an entertaining play of mistaken identity, with a message of abolishing inequality among people. Meanwhile, in between plays, the audience were tested by the quiz from Roman. Kids, however, outwitted their parents in the quiz with their prompt answers. The next play, Magic Ball, was about a girl who was able to go on an adventurous world tour, thanks to her grandfather’s magic ball. This play had lot of songs and dances to keep the audience entertained. Next, the children came dressed in weird costumes reflecting mythical creatures. Rather than scaring the audiences, it kept them in splits. The audience were then tested with riddles titled, But this time too, parents failed against their quick-witted children. Another play, A mystery forever, was filled with adventure as characters tried their best to solve a puzzle. It kept the audience on their toes, as they kept trying to guess what unfolds next in the play. Criminal Mind(less) was truly mindless and logic deprived with a doomed combination of criminals trying to rob a library mistaking it for a bank. The final play was a remake of Cinderella, but this time it was named, Cinderoi. The play was a spoof on the journey of Messi into the football world, followed by the adaptation of the famous British series, Mind Your Language, with the same title. However, the most awaited part of the event, the Raffle Prize draw, was probably the best segment, as the audience hoped that the number alloted them wins the prize. There were various hilarious moments during the event, as some children looked lost on the stage, while some forgot their lines, and the prompting being audible enough to make a mess of the play.
