Agra: A 62-year-old mentally-challenged woman was beaten to death by a mob which accused her of being a ‘witch’ who was behind the recent incidents of women’s braids being chopped off.
The lynching took place on Tuesday night when Maan Devi stepped out of her house in Agra's Dauki district to relieve herself. She lost her way in the darkness and reached a nearby colony, PTI quoted police as saying.
A girl sleeping outside her house was scared on seeing Devi, who was wearing a white saree, and raised alarm, the police said. Soon after, locals gathered at the spot and suspecting she was a witch, they beat her up.
Her family members rushed her to an Agra hospital from where she was released after first-aid but she died on the way home, PTI reported.
The case marks the first casualty of a widespread panic in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana over reports of women’s braids being mysteriously chopped off.
“I was preparing tea when around 3:30pm, my head started hurting and I felt dizzy. I fell down and felt a shadow. I felt someone was cutting my hair. Then I couldn’t see anything. I don’t know whether it was ghost. I have no idea what it was," a woman told CNN-News18.
Inspector DP Sharma of Doki police station told PTI that a case of murder has been registered against two persons and further investigation was on.
