London: A 42-year-old woman thief here has been convicted for her 229th offence, with a flabbergasted British judge calling her the "worst female criminal" ever seen by him.

In the latest theft, Penelope Russell targeted 74-year-old Dorothy Hall who was shopping with her daughter, stealing away her handbag from her trolley, the Daily Express reported.

Few days back, she had also robbed another woman of her handbag. Convicting her for her 228th an 229th offences, Judge Paul Glenn told Russell that he had never encountered a woman with so many convictions. The court heard that Russell's 227 previous offences included 129 for theft and 52 for fraud.

Judge Glenn told Russell, "You have a truly appalling record. I have never seen a female offender with so many convictions. You are a professional criminal and the public deserves a rest from you, particularly the female shoppers you

so regularly target."
