BELGAUM: Umesh Mayannavar, a BSc student of B K College in Chikodi, took up a project called ‘Clean the Canal’ and received the ‘Best Leader’ award from Deshpande Centre for Social Entrepreneurship in Hubli.A sub-canal constructed by Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited was blocked with mud near Hirekudi in Chikodi taluk, where 50 farmers owning over 110 acres were facing irrigation problems. Umesh, who attended an orientation programme of LEAD project of DCSE in 2010, decided to fix the problem. He discussed the problem with the farmers, and approached excavator owner Subhash Chougale. Then, he submitted an online proposal to DCSE under LEAD project which, in turn, assured to help him. Though fundraising was the main challenge, Umesh convinced the farmers and collected `2,500 from them. The blockade was four feet deep and ran to a length of one km. The canal was blocked for five years and was cleaned in five hours. When Express contacted him, Umesh said, “Before joining LEAD, I knew the problem and was unable to solve it. When I saw smiles on the faces of the farmers after the completion of the project, it brought me immense happiness.”
