ALAPPUZHA: A 25-yr-old youth, who allegedly escaped from police custody,was found hanging from a tree at Arthunkal near here, on Monday. The police said the deceased Shaiju Peter, 25, son of Ouseppachan, Pattanissery Colony, Thyckal, Cherthala, was called by the police on Sunday after a bus owner lodged a complaint that Shaiju had damaged the front glass of the bus.The police said that Shaiju appeared before the sub inspector with a CPM branch secretary on Sunday. As he was busy attending a meeting of local-level Coastal Vigilance Committee, Shaiju and the secretary went home. Now, sources informed that Shaiju escaped from the police custody when all the policemen were attending the funeral of a policeman at Arthunkal on Sunday.Shaiju was found dead on Monday morning. Tension prevailed at Thyckal following the death of Shaiju. Locals blocked private buses on Alappuzha-Cherthala coastal road and damaged one bus. The people alleged that he committed suicide following physical torture by the police. The private bus operators have declared indefinite strike on Alappuzha-Cherthala coastal road.
