New Delhi: Yuki Bhambri created history on Saturday, becoming only the fourth Indian to win a junior Grand Slam singles title following his emphatic straight-set win over Alexandros-Ferdinandos Georgoudas of Germany in the boys final at the Melbourne Park.
The other Indians in the elite list are Ramanathan Krishnan (1954 Juniour Wimbledon champion), his son Ramesh Krishnan (1970 Wimbledon and French Open junior champion) and Leander Paes (1990 Junior Wimbledon and Junior US Open champion).
Yuki’s mother Indu Bhambri told CNN-IBN she was expecting the win and now expects her son to come hope at the earliest. She also expressed hope that corporates will sponsor Bhambri.
“I haven't spoken him yet but when I do I will tell him well done and come home now. I was expecting this win since he was already world no.2. He wanted to do this and become the top seed. He will be training for men's tournaments now. He doesn’t party much, has a very disciplined life - getting up early in the morning everyday for practice, his recreation is playing with his brothers. I am hoping that corporates will come forward to sponsor my son,” she said.
The Delhi boy, who lost in the semi-finals here last year, was at his dominant best from the start and seemed determined to lift the title this time as he broke his German opponent in the fourth game of the opening set.
