Appam, also called paniyaram, is a type of pancake that is spherical and is quite famous in South India and Sri Lanka.

Bananas are excellent for health and when added to certain dishes, we get amazing textures and flavour. Packed with carbs, vitamin B6, manganese, fibre, potassium and other nutrients, bananas should be a part of everyone’s daily diet. However, we have often come across situations when we buy bananas in bulk and a few days later, we see it turning brown and then black and finally throw it away. But here is a way you can add it to an easy recipe and relish the recipe.

Appam, also called paniyaram, is a type of pancake that is spherical and is quite famous in South India and Sri Lanka and is made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk. But if you have ripe bananas at home, you can try the banana appam recipe.

To make this, you will need 2-3 ripe bananas, 1/2 cup wheat flour, 1/4 cup rice flour, Country sugar 1 cup, Cardamom 1/4 tsp, 1/2 cup grated coconut and a tablespoon of ghee. You will also need a teaspoon of black sesame seeds, soda salt and water.

Here is a step-by-step recipe-

  • Take the ripe bananas and mash them well with a fork. Do not blend it.
  • Sieve wheat and rice flour together. Then add the sugar and water.
  • Mix it thoroughly to form a dough without lumps.
  • Add cardamom and mix in the grated coconut along with some ghee to the dough.
  • Take the appam pan and let it heat. Then add ghee and cook the mixture until it turns a beautiful golden brown shade and the inside is cooked fully.

Banana Appam is an amazing option for breakfast. It is fulfilling, healthy and will give your body more energy. There are various kinds of bananas like Robusta, Rasthali, Poovan, Red Banana, Monthan, Malbhog and Yelakki. While you may attempt to make this exceptional dish with any of the bananas, the most commonly used is Robusta. Apart from Appam, you can consider making malpuas, cupcakes, pudding, pancakes, bread, dosa or cake with bananas.
