First Solar Eclipse Of 2024: Dos And Don’ts During The Sutak Period
The Sutak period starts 12 hours before the onset of solar eclipse and it is considered to be an inauspicious time.

We have just stepped into 2024 and now it is imperative that we know about the first solar eclipse of the year. Amavasya is the day of the solar eclipse, if one observes it according to religious doctrine. This year’s first solar eclipse is scheduled to happen on Chaitra Amavasya. A solar eclipse is said to take place as Rahu and Ketu approach to consume the Sun, according to religious beliefs. The Sutak period starts 12 hours before the onset of solar eclipse and it is considered to be an inauspicious time. During this time, no initiation of new work, worshipping of any deity or any auspicious task should be done. Tirupati-based astrologer Dr Krishna Kumar Bhargava tells us in detail about the first solar eclipse of the year. The first solar eclipse of the year will take place on Monday, April 8, according to the astrologer. Similar to the first lunar eclipse, this solar eclipse is occurring on a Monday. On that day, the Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month falls on Amavasya. The hours of Amavasya Tithi on April 8 are 03:21 AM to 11:50 PM.

This solar eclipse will begin at 09:12 PM on April 8 and will end at 01:25 AM. With the end of the eclipse, its Sutak period will end. The Sutak period of the solar eclipse starts 12 hours earlier, on this basis, the Sutak period of this solar eclipse should start from 09:12 am. This solar eclipse will not be visible in India, hence its Sutak period will not be valid.

The first solar eclipse of the new year will be visible in the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, North Pole, South Pole, Africa, North America, South America, South-West Europe, Australia, West Asia.

Dos and Don’t during Sutak Period:

During the Sutak phase of the eclipse, pregnant women need to exercise extra caution. Knives, scissors, blades, and other sharp things should not be handled. Some religious views state that utilising them could harm the unborn child.

During the Sutak period, avoid cooking and eating. There is a religious belief that food might become tainted and unhealthy as a result of the eclipse’s adverse effects. It is also forbidden to sleep during this period.

Do not perform puja during Sutak period. Do not start any auspicious work or new work. Just chant the name of your favourite deity.

Once the eclipse has passed, tidy up the home, take a bath, and change into fresh clothes. Donating wheat after the eclipse is over is considered auspicious.
