What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a broad term for a variety of disorders affecting the joints, surrounding tissues, and other connective structures. The two most frequent varieties of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, both of which have distinct causes.
The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. It results from joint cartilage wear and tear. Cartilage protects the bone ends and keeps them from rubbing together as you walk. When the cartilage goes away, the bone will grind right on top of another, resulting in joint discomfort and stiffness.
Rheumatoid arthritis is another prevalent form of arthritis. It occurs when the immune system attacks the joint lining (synovium). This swells and gradually damages the cartilage and bone. Multiple joints can be afflicted at the same time, and persons with rheumatoid arthritis may experience issues in other regions of their bodies as well.
Early Symptoms
Early arthritis symptoms might vary from person to person, but the most prevalent ones include:
- The swelling of one or more joints
- Stiffness in the Joint
- Joint discomfort and aches.
- Warmth and Redness
These can worsen over time as the joint deteriorates, although they can also remain stable for a while before worsening.
