New Delhi: There is no better way to get familiar with the soul of Delhi than through its food. Get a bunch of friends, add in your favourite beverages, and you've got a guaranteed amazing and memorable time. Even though ‘Ýeh Dil Mange Momos’, the recent food festival in the capital had nothing to do with its ‘traditional’ street food, it was a big draw. And if the footfall at the first edition of India’s first ever momo festival is any indicator, the city’s newest foray into the dumplings that are native to Tibet will continue to be a huge hit.
Organizers were quite clearly overwhelmed by the turnout at the festival. While the people started pouring in since noon, the lunch hour witnessed many more visitors and a bigger crowd turned up later in the evening. “We are delighted with the number of people who attended the festival. It has been a great response. We wanted only 15 vendors for this event. However, there were a couple of popular vendors which we wanted to participate. Since a lot of things happened at the last minute, sudden changes had to be accommodated. We selected our 15 vendors on the basis of our research. To ensure our guests had a terrific time, we tried momos at every outlet,” said Yashika, one of the co-founders of GoBuzzinga.
The festival drew a large number of people across all age groups. So if kids were happy to wait in a queue for their favourtie Chocolate Momos, parents were busy purchasing Vodka/Afghani Momos and grandparents enjoyed a feast of sights, smells and sounds.
While the festival was buzzing with several college-goers and young professionals, we spoke to a guest Meenakshi Luthra (60) who told us why she didn’t mind taking a break from her regular lunch drill. “I'm 60 and at this age I have to be extra cautious about what I eat. But you've spotted me here because I couldn't resist the temptation of gorging on different varieties of Momos,” Meenakshi said.
From stalls stocked with steamed to fried Momos (from vendors like Dolma Aunty (Lajpat Nagar), Hungry Birds (Amar Colony), Dilli 19 (Kalkaji), QD's (Satya Niketan)) to its live cookery demonstrations, live music and artists of the Delhi Street Art group displaying an interesting artwork, the day-long food event provided something interesting to all foodies. “Why would anyone want to miss this event? ‘Yeh Dil Mange Momos’ offers everything to pull a huge crowd. Look around to see how people are enjoying being out while indulging in the greatest bites this festival has to offer,” said visitor Arpita Gupta.
Even though the festival featured a scrumptious medley of Tandoori, Pan, Vodka Momos, interesting variations like the Chocolate Momos and Momo Brgers found several takers. “It is simply superb how the vendors are working hard to delight the taste buds of visitors who’ve had to content themselves with the regular varieties,” said another visitor Rahul.
Amidst Delhi’s not-so-pleasant weather, the exuberant and satiated crowd, the day long ‘Ýeh Dil Mange Momos’ concluded with the visitors expecting that it would bring more excitement and delight in its upcoming editions. “We all know what impact the first edition of ‘Yeh Dil Maange Momos’ has left. Even though the event hasn’t ended I’m already excited about its next edition. For several foodies like me, the festival tuned out to be a momos lovers’ paradise."
