The importance of Women Rock Day is deeply rooted in history, particularly on January 3, 1987, when Aretha Franklin achieved a historic milestone. On this day, Aretha Franklin made history by becoming the first woman to be inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This momentous occasion not only celebrated Franklin’s extraordinary contributions to music but also symbolized a groundbreaking moment for women in the rock genre.

Established in 1986, the Hall of Fame embarked on a journey to recognise and celebrate outstanding musicians, including iconic women such as Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, and Joni Mitchell.

5 All-Female Rock Bands

1. The RunawaysFormed in 1975 by drummer Sandy West and guitarist Joan Jett, initially featured Jett, West and bassist Michael Steele. In 1976, lead guitarist Lita Ford and lead vocalist Cherie Currie joined the group. Later, Jackie Fox replaced Steele after her departure. Despite being successful, the band disbanded in 1979, as Joan Jett and Lita Ford decided to pursue solo careers.
2. L7An American band established in Los Angeles in 1985, initially operated between 1985-2001 before making a grand comeback in 2014. The band’s lineup features Suzi Gardner, Donita Sparks, Jennifer Finch and Dee Plakas.
3. The DonnasThe Donnas were formed in 1993 by Brett Anderson, Allison Robertson, Maya Ford, and Torry Castellano. The band initially named themselves The Electrocuts, before adopting the name The Donnas.
4. The Vinyl RecordsThe New Delhi-based group, founded in 2010 by Banu Jini, Minam Tekseng and Tatak, originally from Arunachal Pradesh, welcomed Cheyyrian Bark in 2011. Their journey gained momentum with their performance on MTV India’s F1 Rocks show in 2011.
5. FannyOne of the leading all-female rock groups, faced major obstacles related to race, gender and sexuality in the music industry of the 70s. Their story was later depicted in the 2021 movie, Fanny: The Right to Rock.
