World Theatre Day 2024: History

The International Theatre Institute (ITI) was established in 1961 with the aim of promoting World Theatre Day globally and emphasising the significance and impact of theatre.

Each year on March 27, ITI presents a message written by a prominent artist to convey their reflections on the art of theatre and its future. The tradition began in 1962 with a message composed by Jean Cocteau.

On this day, ITI Centres and numerous theatre-related organizations including theatres, theatre professionals, and universities, commemorate the occasion in diverse ways, marking the start of the 1962 Theatre of Nations season in Paris.

World Theatre Day 2024: Significance

The International Message is translated into over 50 languages, delivered to tens of thousands of people before performances in theatres throughout the world, and published in hundreds of daily newspapers.

People in the audio-visual field provide a helping hand, with over a hundred radio and television stations broadcasting the message to audiences across all five continents.
