Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi co-star Seema Pahwa recently shared an experience that shifted her perspective on the actress. In a recent interview with Hindi Rush, Seema recalled how Alia came to the rescue of a child artist during a challenging scene, when director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was getting frustrated.
She recalled, “Back in my mind I was anticipating, ‘she is a new girl and from a film family, I wonder how she would be as a person.’ But, I was surprised. She treated me with a lot of respect. Maybe because Sanjay introduced me to her as a senior actor. But, one incident on set changed my perspective about her.”
The veteran actress recalled how, during a late-night scene, a young girl kept falling asleep and missing her line, which upset Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She said, “There was a scene with a young girl, who was pretending to be asleep and then had to say one dialogue. They were shooting for that one scene for a long time. It was about 3 in the morning. The child was sleepy. So, every time she went to the bed, she would actually fall asleep and miss her dialogue. This made Sanjay furious and irritated. He was yelling, ‘why is she falling asleep every time?’ It was at this time that Alia Bhatt came to her rescue. I saw it myself. She instructed the child artist that ‘when I will pull your arm, you say your dialogue.’ It was a selfless gesture, it impressed me.”
Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a 2022 film starring Alia Bhatt as Gangubai Kothewali. The movie is based on a chapter from Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi. It tells the story of Gangubai’s rise from being sold into prostitution to becoming a powerful figure in Mumbai’s underworld. The film, set in the 1960s, has been praised for Alia Bhatt’s performance and Bhansali’s direction.
