Amid 'Udta Punjab' Controversy, CBFC Clears a Punjabi Film Based on Drugs
Why the double standards?

While Anurag Kashyap and Phantom Films are going pillar to post to get their film 'Udta Punjab' cleared by the CBFC, there is another Punjabi film, dealing with drug problem in the state that has been cleared by CBFC.

Titled as 'Dhee Punjab Di', the film deals with drug problem and female foeticide that exists in Punjab. But unlike 'Udta Punjab' which CBFC refers as obscene, this film has been given a 'U' Certificate. The film's director Baljeet Singh told the Times Of India, "They said that 'Your film deserves a 'U' certificate as drugs is a pan-India issue today and it's not just restricted to Punjab'. These things are also happening in states like Haryana, Rajasthan and Maharashtra." Singh was asked to cut only one scene where a young boy is scene snorting drugs. However, the filmmaker ads that 'Udta Punjab' shows Punjab in a bad light and therefore should not get a commercial release.

Singh states that the 'bad language' that Shahid Kapoor is seen using in the film is against Indian culture. Singh will be organising a press conference on Monday in Amritsar for his and has even stated he will burn effigies of Shahid, Anurag and Ekta Kapoor at Matka Chowk, Chandigarh. "If they will apologise to us, then only we will allow the film to release in Punjab, otherwise we'll protest against them," Baljeet said.

While CBFC's has on Monday stated that 'Udta Punjab' has been cleared after 13 cuts and given an 'A' certificate, the filmmakers who had approached the Bombay High Court are awaiting the verdict on the issue.
