The rising entourage costs in Bollywood have become quite the talking point recently. Several filmmakers and producers like Farah Khan and Anurag Kashyap among others have spoken about how today, less money is used to make a film and more money is spent catering to the actor’s entourage. Recently, Anurag Kashyap mentioned how the boom in OTT budgets due to the platforms’ success has also contributed to promoting this culture.
Speaking on Humans of Cinema’s YouTube channel, Anurag said that people realised their worth after the OTT boom. He said, “For example, I had never seen so many vanity vans on my set like I saw on Sacred Games.” He added, “That’s how the culture got started. Then you can’t reverse that. Finally, those people started getting paid who were totally ignored, which is the technical crew… It’s fair, in a way. But a lot of extra things started coming in.”
Talking about why big-budget films haven’t been working recently, he said, “Because they aren’t spending on just the film. One thing people need to understand is that when we make a film, we’re working, we’re creating something. It’s not a holiday, it’s not a picnic. A lot of money that is spent doesn’t go into making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia, it goes into the entourage. You’re shooting in the middle of a jungle, but one car will be sent to the city three hours away specifically to get you that five-star burger you want.”
Farah Khan didn’t hold back discussing the growing costs of actor entourage in the film industry, where it’s common for them to bring along at least nine people to set. During a recent chat on Twin Encounter’s episode on Chinki Minki’s YouTube channel she said that the entourage costs have become too much. An actress brings 9 people, an actor brings 8. “That is a waste of resources. Woh film mein dikhta nahi hai. Woh cost. Toh I think that needs to be controlled a bit. Producers pe bahut bhari padta hain,” she added.
During a recent video chat, Farah Khan discussed the lavish demands of a few movie stars, including the need for multiple vanity vans for themselves and their entourage, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes requirements of actors. During a YouTube vlog conversation with TV actor Dipika Kakkar and her husband, actor Shaoib Ibrahim, Farah shared, “Until the vans don’t come, they don’t act. Nowadays, each actor has about four vans for themselves. One person. One is for their gym, one is for their staff, one is for them, one is… then the food truck comes, that’s separate.”
