Anya Taylor-Joy On How Her Character Loses Arm In Furiosa: Mad Max Film
The prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, will finally answer the mysterious question.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the post-apocalyptic action film of the Mad Max franchise is ready to hit the theatres in a few weeks. The film is set 15 to 20 years before the events of Max: Fury Road, which makes it a prequel to the 2015 film. As the film’s title suggests, it will focus on the journey of Imperator Furiosa. Like all five Mad Max films, this one is also directed by George Miller. Actor Anya Taylor-Joy of Queen’s Gambit fame plays the younger Furiosa, a role previously portrayed by Charlize Theron.

Furiosa’s fierce personality is supplemented by her look which has two key elements, one is her fake arm and her bald head. Charlize Theron famously went bald to play Furiosa, whereas Anya Taylor-Joy has long hair in most of the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Now Mad Max fans are anticipating that the new film will reveal what led to Furiosa shaving her head and how exactly she lost her arm. So far, there are many theories about her bald look and the metal arm.

In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Anya Taylor-Joy hinted that the new film explores these two mysteries as both of these physical characteristics form an important part of Furiosa’s journey. The 28-year-old actor said, “Both were important steps that we had to take if we were going to be able to chart the journey of how this little girl became a character that now we all know and love.” She added, “I think what’s incredible about this character is she just refuses to die — really, she refuses. It made sense to me that she would lose her arm in the pursuit of something that she thought was bigger than herself.”

Previously director George Miller had told Entertainment Weekly that in the original storyboard, Furiosa has her hair pulled back. However, actor Charlize Theron suggested that Furiosa should be bald as it would be more suited for her warrior-like lifestyle. Miller said, “She (Charlize Theron) said long hair would drive her (Furiosa) nuts, and she’s got to be much more efficient than that. So she said, ‘I’m thinking of shaving my head, and I just want to make sure that you are okay with it.’ I was so happy because it defined the character.”

In a recent Entertainment Weekly interview, George Miller revealed that he first saw Anya Taylor-Joy in Edgar Wright’s 2021 film Last Night in Soho. The 79-year-old veteran filmmaker described Anya Taylor-Joy as, “There’s definitely a mystique to her, but also, there’s someone very, very resolute in her. You sense it almost immediately. And I think that’s up there on the screen.”
