70th National Film Awards: Gulmohar wins Best (Hindi) National Film Award 2024. Released in March 2023, the film starred Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Bajpayee as the lead. While the movie emerged victorious in the Best Film category, Manoj Bajpayee was given special mention by the jury for his performance.
Gulmohar is a Star Studios production in association with Chalkboard Entertainment and Autonomous Works. The film’s original music is composed by Siddhartha Khosla and also stars Simran, Suraj Sharma, Amol Palekar, and Kaveri Seth, amongst others. The film was highly praised by the fans too and received positive reviews from critics. The family drama revolves around the multi-generation Batra family who is all set to move out of their 34-year-old family home.
Gulmohar also marked Tagore’s return to the screens 13 years after Break Ke Baad. It won her wide critical acclaim for her sensitive portrayal of a matriarch of a family who’s revealed to be queer.
Interestingly, Sharmila Tagore won the Best Actor (Female – Jury Choice) award for Gulmohar at the News18 Showsha Reel Awards 2024 in February this year. Back then, the veteran actress spoke exclusively to us when she said, “Well, I don’t quite look at it as a comeback or a re-start. But playing Kusum in Gulmohar was a wonderful experience. I would like to thank Rahul V Chittella. It was his thought. I got to work with a wonderful cast – Manoj Bajpayee, Amol Palekar, Simran, Utsavi Jha, Kaveri Seth, Suraj Sharma and Chandan Roy.”
Tagore further talked about how the film left a lasting impression on the minds of cine lovers and added, “Even one year on, there’s so much recall of the film and appreciation of it. It has worked across all generations and crossed all boundaries. It’s a very special film indeed. The film is not just mine; it’s a collaborative effort. Everybody has really liked the queer aspect of it as well including my wink in the end.”
