In 1994, director KS Ravikumar made a film that would go on to become one of the most successful and popular films of the 90s. The film starred Sarathkumar in dual roles of brothers, Meena and Khushbu. If you have not guessed it, we are talking of the film Nattamai. It became a trendsetter for many films in later years.
The Goundamani-Senthil comic duo was one of the most popular aspects of the film. Initially, Malayalam star Mammootty and R Parthiban were also reportedly approached for the lead role but neither could do it due to other commitments. The role thereafter landed with Sarathkumar.
Sarathkumar played a strict village headman and also his younger brother. Those who have watched Nattamai will remember that the film also had an extended cameo appearance by Vijayakumar who played father to the lead pair of brothers in the film. He appeared in a flashback sequence and was also shown to be a strict village headman with strong principles. However, do you know that this cameo appearance was played by Rajinikanth in two of the film’s remakes?
Rajinikanth has predominantly appeared in Tamil films in his career and this was a rare occurrence where he was not part of the Tamil original but appeared in the film’s Telugu and Hindi remakes. Nattamai was remade in Telugu in 1995 as Pedarayudu with Mohan Babu in the lead roles. Rajinikanth appeared as the father of the heroes, played by Vijayakumar in the original.
The film was later remade in Hindi as well as Bulandi, with Anil Kapoor in the lead roles of two brothers. Once again, Rajinikanth reprised his role as the father to the brothers. Nattamai was so popular that it was also remade in Kannada but in this version, Vishnuvardhan played a triple role as the two brothers as well as the father’s character as well.
