Coming out in the longest dress one has ever seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Cardi B did her fashion game just right at the Met Gala 2024. Going all dramatic with her look, the Grammy-winning rapper was dressed in a black dress on the carpet. Adding more striking details to her look, she added a matching beehive-style headpiece along with luscious green jewels to match the greenery of the carpet backdrop.
While Cardi B’s Met Gala outfit did turn a lot of heads on the red carpet, the rapper happened to have forgotten the name of her designer, leaving everyone even more surprised. During her red carpet interview at the event with Vogue, Cardi while referring to Sensen Lii of Windowsen, the designer behind her jaw-dropping black dress called him an “Asian" instead. On the red carpet, as Emma Chamberlain asked for the creator of her dress, the 31-year-old said, “I feel amazing. It is this amazing designer. They are Asian and everything."
This instantly went viral on social media with fans coming forward in large numbers to criticise Cardi for her remarks. Some even slammed her for being racially insensitive towards her designer.
Among all, Gilbert Cheah, Vogue’s former managing director also called out the rapper with a fierce comment on Instagram. “For the record and recognition, and no thanks to Cardi B, the designer of her gown is Sensen Lii who’s Chinese. The gown took two months to make. I personally think it’s boring and not even on theme but she chose it and should have at least remembered his name and not just that he’s ‘Asian’," he wrote.
Cardi B clarifies her ‘Asian’ remark
Amid massive backlash and criticism all over the Internet, the rapper has now taken charge and is herself setting the record straight.
In a video shared on her Instagram, Cardi B explained that she was very scared on the red carpet and had a lot of things on her mind as she was being rushed to the front line. She also shared that her response was spontaneous and that she forgot to pronounce her designer’s name as it was a bit complicated.

Mentioning that she wasn’t trying to be offensive or call out someone based on his or her nationality, the rapper added, “As a person who works in fashion, I feel like my designer and my stylist worked very hard."
Taking to her Instagram stories, she also expressed gratitude toward her designer. “I chose you because of your amazing talent and you came through really making this Met Gala a night to remember," she wrote.
