Bhandarkar, who has interesting films like Chandni Bar, Page 3 and Traffic Signal, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji and Heroine to his credit uses the 1975-77 Emergency period in India for his latest.

Having bagged the National Film Awards for the Best Feature Film and Best Director for Page 3 and Traffic Signal, Bhandarkar captures the struggle and violence that people were subjected to during the period that lasted for 21 months.

Featuring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kirti Kulhari, Tota Roy Chaudhary, Supriya Vinod and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles, Indu Sarkar has characters that have based on the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi and other Congress leaders.
