Simu Liu, the Canadian actor who portrayed the titular character in the hit action-adventure film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, recently provided reassurance to fans eagerly awaiting the sequel. Despite the lack of updates about the sequel, Liu’s message on Threads sparked hope and excitement among the dedicated fan base. The original film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, premiered in North America on August 16, 2021.
With regards to its sequel, Simu Liu has recently replied to a fan on Threads who wrote, “I feel like Marvel has abandoned the Shang-Chi fan base. There has been no effort by the studio to get the sequel filming or even include the character in other Marvel films.”
“I proooomiss it’s happening,” answered Liu. Meanwhile, other fans of the film and Liu also commented on the post, expressing their concerns regarding the film’s sequel.
Upon its release, about three years ago, the film garnered widespread critical acclaim and achieved remarkable commercial success, raking in reportedly over $430 million globally. With its high rating on Rotten Tomatoes (91%), the film also made its place as a significant addition to the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The movie’s success was particularly notable given the uncertainty surrounding theatrical releases at the time, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continuing to impact theaters worldwide.
However, despite the initial buzz surrounding the film’s sequel, Marvel Studios has encountered challenges with its recent projects, facing criticism and lacklustre responses from audiences. Disney CEO Bob Iger attributed some of these issues to a perceived lack of oversight and an oversaturation of Marvel content on Disney+, reports CBR. Moreover, he added that controversies involving cast members have forced Marvel Studios to rethink its strategies for future MCU endeavours.
Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of the original Shang-Chi film, has also been busy with other projects, including the highly anticipated Avengers 5, set for release on May 1, 2026. Meanwhile, lead Simu Liu himself has been making waves in Hollywood, starring as one of the Ken dolls in the blockbuster film Barbie.
Despite these challenges and distractions, Simu Liu’s recent confirmation that the Shang-Chi sequel is still in development is a promising sign for fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the story of the Master of Kung Fu.
