Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff has approached Delhi High Court to protect his names, personality and bar people from using his name ‘Bhidu’ without his permission. On Tuesday, it was reported that Jackie has submitted a suit against various entities using his name, photographs, voice and his nickname, ‘Bhidu’ without his consent, as reported by Bar and Bench. The matter has been listed for hearing tomorrow, May 14. The court will consider passing an interim order based on tomorrow’s hearing.
“His counsels also told the court that in some instances, offensive memes have been made using his images and that his voice has been misused for similar purposes as well. The Court was informed that in certain cases, pornographic material is being created using Shroff’s persona. The Court today issued summons on Shroff’s suit and said it will consider the case tomorrow on the interim injunction application,” Bar and Bench reported on X.
This is not the first time a Bollywood actor has approached the court to seek permission to protect their personality rights. Last year, Anil Kapoor had also approached the court to protect his personality rights. The actor won the case January this year. The victory resulted in protection of his name, voice, image, likeness, manner of speaking and gestures, and even the ‘jhakaas’ catchphrase.
He spoke to Variety this year about the move and said, “I think [the decision] is very progressive and great not only for me but for other actors also … Because of the way AI technology is evolving every day. It’s not only for me. Today I’m there to protect myself, but when I’m not there, the family should have the right to protect my [personality] and gain from it in future.” “It’s only a matter of time before you’ll be able to recreate any dead person at any age with the voice and the mannerisms, so I want to have some control.”
Meanwhile, Jackie is yet to issue a statement to the press and fans on his decision to approach the court.
