Amar Singh Chamkila’s biopic, featuring Diljit Dosanjh, is now available on Netflix. The movie depicts the life of the Punjabi singer who was tragically murdered at 27. Parineeti Chopra portrays his second wife, Amarjot Kaur. The film also sheds light on the singer’s children.
Amar Singh Chamkila had three children. Prior to Amarjot Kaur, he was married to Gurmail Kaur during his early career in the Punjabi music industry. With Gurmail, Chamkila had two daughters, Amandeep Kaur and Kamaldeep Kaur. Despite marrying Amarjot while still married to Gurmail, he also had a son, Jaiman Chamkila.
Amandeep Kaur and Kamaldeep Kaur are Chamkila’s children from his first wife, Gurmail Kaur. Amandeep was only four years old when her father passed away, leaving her to take care of her mother in difficult times. Gurmail, also struggling post-Chamkila’s death, revealed her favorite song of her late husband – Pehle Lalkare Naal.
Kamaldeep Kaur now resides in Canada and is known by her stage name Kamal Chamkila. Collaborating with Punjabi singer Raj Brar for her debut song Lalkara, she has also ventured into the music industry like her father.
Jaiman Chamkila, following the footsteps of his father and sister, is a singer as well. At 39, he eagerly awaits the movie release, hoping for its success with audiences. Recalling his childhood, Jaiman mentioned being raised by his maternal grandparents since his parents were occupied with stage shows and he was too young at the time of their tragic demise.
Meanwhile, News18 gave the film 3.5/5 stars. Our review of the film read, “Diljit delivers a stupendous act as the protagonist. The character of Amar Singh Chamkila is tailor-made for him and he pours his heart out into it. His hard work is palpable and yet his performance is effortless. Watching him become Chamkila and sing his songs will fill your heart up with unadulterated joy. Even in some heavy-weight scenes, he brings a rare restraint to the fore and renders a whole new layer of poise. It, inarguably, is his career-best performance. And somewhere in the middle, you will see him becoming one with Chamkila and very soon, you won’t be able to separate these forces that forever changed the music industry of Punjab.”
The film Amar Singh Chamkila is directed by Imtiaz Ali and is available to be streamed on Netflix.
