14 years after her directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat, Kiran Rao has continued to entertain audiences with her latest film, Laapataa Ladies. While the film initially flew under the radar during its theatrical release, it has gained significant popularity since its debut on Netflix, becoming a fan favourite. Now, Laapataa Ladies, starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastava, is set to reach a new audience as it prepares for its release in Japan. Kiran shared the exciting news on Instagram, unveiling the Japanese trailer and announcing that the film will premiere in Japan on October 4.

According to Kiran’s post, the movie will be released by Shochiku, one of the country’s largest entertainment companies. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film will likely be shown in its original Hindi language, as the trailer features a Japanese narrator and subtitles. Sharing the trailer, Kiran wrote, “Laapataa Ladies will be found in Japan from October 4, 2024. We are so excited for our theatrical release in Japan by Shochiku, Japan – arigato gozaimasu.”

Back in August, the movie was screened for Supreme Court judges. Talking about the experience with ETimes, Kiran Rao said, “I had to pinch myself several times to believe it was really happening. The screening was full, and there was so much warmth. People may have seen the film before, but they were watching so kindly, engaged, with so much laughter in the hall. It was so enjoyable for both Aamir and me to watch it with an audience again.”

Kiran Rao highlighted that two scenes from Laapataa Ladies received particularly strong reactions from viewers. One scene features a discussion between two older women about why women in a household often can’t be friends, while another includes the impactful line, “Iss desh mein ladkiyon ke saath fraud ho raha hai – uska naam hai bhale ghar ki bahu-beti.” Kiran explained that these scenes aim to reflect the real experiences women face both at home and in the workplace. She believes these moments resonated with the audience because they portrayed genuine conversations rather than coming across as preachy.

Laapataa Ladies follows the story of two brides, Phool Kumari and Jaya, played by Nitanshi Goel and Pratibha Ranta, respectively, who get swapped during a train journey. This mix-up happens when a newlywed husband, Deepak Kumar, played by Sparsh Shrivastava, mistakenly takes the wrong bride home. The film blends humour along with the struggles and society’s expectations for women.
