Rakesh Roshan picked up exercising soon after his early-stage throat cancer surgery.

It is often said that when it comes to fitness, age is just a number. No one proves this adage more than filmmaker Rakesh Roshan. At an age when many people give up on exercising or just stick to short strolls, the veteran producer-director takes up elaborate fitness challenges which can put a 20-year-old to shame. The 74-year-old routinely shares videos of his extensive fitness routine with his 1.5 lakh Instagram followers. In many ways, Rakesh Roshan shares the passion for working out with his son Hrithik Roshan.

Recently, the Koi Mil Gaya director shared a video that showed him doing an array of exercises including battle roping, push-ups, pull-ups, squats and more. Roshan was training under the guidance of celebrity fitness coach Sajid Khan. While sharing this clip on Tuesday, he wrote, “Functional & strength training alternate days completes my weekly circuit.” His post prompted a number of appreciative comments. Actor Anupam Kher commented, “Jai Ho!”, while action director Sham Kaushal remarked, “Kaya baat Rakesh Ji. So inspiring.”

What is even more inspiring about Rakesh Roshan’s fitness journey is that he made his way back to the gym soon after undergoing treatment for early-stage throat cancer. He was diagnosed with the disease in December 2018 and soon underwent surgery and chemo-radiation therapy. The early diagnosis and prompt treatment helped Rakesh Roshan beat cancer. Since 2018, the Filmfare-winning director has openly spoken about how his positive attitude and consistent fitness routine helped with his recovery.

In 2021, Rakesh Roshan spoke to Hindustan Times on the occasion of World Senior Citizens’ Day. He mentioned how the cancer treatment left him very weak but he persevered. The septuagenarian recalled, “I could not even lift a five-pound dumbbell after my treatment. I started with books and now I am lifting 40 kilos. That is proof that it is all in the mind. I was determined to get my fitness game back after that and I did. And because I already had a fit body, it helped me in recovery as well.”

He added that his Sainik School upbringing enlisted the love for fitness and sports in him from a young age. He also laid out his fitness routine that starts with one hour of yoga in the morning, following a four to five-kilometer walk. After this, he hits the gym with his personal trainer for one and a half hours. In the evening he swims for 45 minutes.
