Ryan Gosling collaborated with Russell Crowe for the comedy film The Nice Guys in 2016. Directed by Shane Black, the film was welcomed with warm reviews upon its release. Despite this, the film never got a sequel. In a recent conversation with a leading media portal, Gosling opened up about the reason why the sequel to The Nice Guys has not been made yet. Blaming it on the box-office collection of the film on its first weekend, the Barbie actor said Angry Birds “destroyed us.”
Gosling, while talking to the Comic Book, explained that his film The Nice Guys’ release date coincided with Angry Birds, leading it to face a tough competition. The actor said, “So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds,” adding “So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.”
Well, Gosling is right. Angry Birds witnessed a strong opening weekend as it amassed a collection worth $38 million at the box office. Conversely, Gosling’s film ended up minting a total of $11.2 million. Apart from Angry Birds’ collection, it was films like Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and Captain America: Civil War that harmed Gosling’s The Nice Guy. Seemingly, Marvel fans also played a factor in The Nice Guy’s decent box-office performance which otherwise, could have been better. At the end of its box office run, The Nice Guys made on a budget of $50 million, grossing an estimated $62 million.
Owing to Angry Birds’ success, the makers of the film announced its sequel. As a consequence, The Angry Birds Movie 2 made it to theatres in 2019.
Speaking of The Nice Guys, it also starred Russell Crowe, Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley, and Yaya DaCosta apart from Gosling in the pivotal roles. The film was set against the backdrop of Los Angeles in the 1970s. The film showcased private eye Holland March (Gosling) and Jackson Healy (Crowe) on their way to investigate the disappearance of a young girl named Amelia. Amelia was played by Qualley.
