Veteran actress Saira Banu marked an emotional occasion on October 2 by sharing never-before-seen photos from her engagement to the late legendary actor Dilip Kumar. On the 58th anniversary of their engagement, Saira took to social media to honor her late husband with a heartfelt note, paying tribute to their timeless bond.
Accompanying the nostalgic photos, Saira reflected on their journey, which began on this day in 1966. She spoke of the unwavering love and trust that defined her relationship with Dilip Kumar, emphasizing how she never questioned the ups and downs throughout their life together.
She wrote, “MOHABBAT MEIN SAWAAL NAHIN KIYE JAATE,” a line uttered by me in the movie ‘Hera Pheri’, and now I wonder, what value does it hold. The purest form of love lies in having faith in your beloved, to the point where the need for questioning simply fades away. Ever since I began my journey with my one true love, my sweetheart, Dilip Sahib, on this unforgettable day the 2nd of October 1966, I have never questioned anything. Whether it was the highs or the lows, or even the still moments in between, I never once doubted or questioned him.”
She continued, “I simply loved. For love, you see, is the foundation upon which everything else stands. It frees you from any burdens, doubts, or expectations, leaving only one thing behind, devotion. And in that devotion, one finds the true essence of love—a love that is unconditional, liberating, and enduring. #EngagementDay.”
Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar were married on October 11, 1966, when she was 22 and he was 44. Their marriage spanned five decades until Dilip’s passing on July 7, 2021. Dilip first fell in love with Saira at her 22nd birthday party. In his memoir Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, he recalled the moment he saw her in a brocade sari, instantly falling in love.
He wrote, “When I alighted from my car and entered the beautiful garden that leads to the house, I can still recall my eyes falling on Saira standing in the foyer of her new house looking breathtakingly beautiful in a brocade sari. I was taken aback, because she was no longer the young girl I had consciously avoided working with because I thought she would look too young to be my heroine. She had indeed grown to full womanhood and was in reality more beautiful than I thought she was. I simply stepped forward and shook her hand and for us, time stood still.” Shortly after, Dilip proposed to Saira.
Dilip also had a brief second marriage to Asma Rehman in 1981, which lasted two years. In his autobiography, he referred to it as a “grave mistake.”
