Sonakshi Sinha-Zaheer Iqbal Perform Aarti During Ganesh Chaturthi: 'When A Couple Honors Each Other's Beliefs'
Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal had a civil marriage with Sonakshi, a Hindu, not converting to Islam. The couple is celebrating their first Ganesh Chaturthi after marriage.

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal, who tied the knot earlier this year amid intense scrutiny over their interfaith marriage, seem to have left all the noise behind. The couple had faced such backlash and trolling that they were forced to switch off comments on their wedding posts. But now, their focus is on building a life together in harmony. Sonakshi and Zaheer had a civil marriage. The actress, a Hindu, didn’t convert to Islam.

On Sunday, Sonakshi and Zaheer celebrated their first Ganesh Chaturthi together and shared a heartwarming video of the festivities on Instagram. In the video, Sonakshi and Zaheer can be seen performing the aarti and offering prayers to Lord Ganesha. What caught everyone’s attention, however, was the thoughtful caption that read, “Love grows in respect, when a couple honors each others beliefs in true harmony…Our first Ganpati after shaadi.”

Sonakshi looked beautiful in a simple yet elegant blue salwar suit, while Zaheer wore a matching blue and white kurta. Together, they held the Aarti thali and offered their prayers.

Instead of a traditional multi-day Indian wedding, the couple opted for a simple and private celebration. Sonakshi recently explained that she chose to skip the usual elaborate pre-wedding events because of her experience at her brother Kussh’s wedding.

In a candid conversation with Galatta India, Sonakshi revealed if she faced any pressure to have a ‘big fat Indian wedding’. The actress said, “There was pressure, but we were very clear on the kind of wedding that we wanted. If you go back a few years to my brother’s wedding, it was huge. There were like 5,000 or 8,000 people at each function. The first thing I told my mother after that was, ‘Meri shaadi waise nahi hogi’ (My wedding won’t be like this).” Kussh Sinha married Taruna Agarwal in 2015, and their wedding was a grand celebration.
