Acclaimed director M Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana has taken the director’s chair for her upcoming film, The Watchers. Produced by her father, the horror mystery stars I Am Sam fame Dakota Fanning in the lead. The film is Ishana’s debut directorial, who was previously associated with the 2019 horror series Servant. On April 22, Warner Bros unveiled the official trailer of The Watchers, gripping movie buffs with intrigue and wonder. The gritty visuals, coupled with a looming uncertainty and a lingering fright throughout, bear a strong connection to M Night Shyalaman’s filmmaking techniques.
The trailer opens with Mina (Dakota Fanning) talking to her pet bird that she was going out with. “Try not to die," she says jokingly to the parrot, which later on in the clip boomerangs on her. The audience also gets a glimpse that Mina has the habit of changing hair wigs, for a reason not revealed. Crossing a missing poster board, she takes on a woodsy road when suddenly she loses signal on her car radio and cell phone. Stepping out into the dark forest, she finds her car missing and then begins a series of horrifying events.
Out of nowhere, an old woman opens an invisible door urging Mina to come inside within five seconds. As she rushes forward, a fleet of bats flies in the sky while the rustling of leaves indicates that there’s danger nearby. Once inside Mina learns that the place is a confinement shared by other strangers who are following some “rules" wary of an unknown threat, having the power to kill. The monsters’ faces are not shown but it is implied that they are extremely vicious and have the ability to play tricks on human minds. It is now up to Mina to find out the truth and put an end to the terror reign.
The Watchers is based on a horror novel of the same title, penned by AH Shine. Besides Dakota Fanning, the film also features a cast ensemble of Siobhan Hewlett, Olwen Fouéré and Georgina Campbell. Blinding Edge Pictures and New Line Cinema are also the executive production companies associated with the movie. The Watchers is slated to hit the silver screens on June 14.
