Govinda is regarded as one of the biggest stars in Bollywood. His name was synonymous to comedy at one point in the film industry. The actor did not have it easy, and had to struggle a lot to be where he is today. Govinda once talked about his struggles in an old interview. The actor reportedly said in the interview that his childhood was filled with financial constraints and other problems. According to Govinda, there was a time when his family was not able to afford ration. So, they had to borrow from the shop to keep themselves fed. He revealed that since they were unable to pay for the ration, the shopkeeper used to make him stand for hours. To handle the financial situation, Govinda looked for jobs in a lot of places; since he did not know English, he could not get one. As he was unable to find a proper job, Govinda decided to try his luck in films. After watching the film Disco Dancer, he was inspired to venture into acting, reports state. Govinda started to practise dancing for hours. Then, he ventured into ad films.
Govinda officially made his debut as a leading man in Bollywood with the film Tan-Badan in 1986. Directed by Anand Singh, Govinda was seen opposite actress Khushbu in the film. Since then, he featured in some of the most successful comedy films of the 90s like Coolie Number 1, Hero Number 1, Raja Babu, Sajan Chale Sasural, Anari Number 1, Haseena Maan Jayegi and many more. In the 2000s, Govinda was seen in several successful comedy films like Bhagam Bhag, Partner, Holiday, after being featured in a series of failed films. He is a recipient of 12 Filmfare Awards Nominations, and has received the award for Best Comedian.
Govinda’s last film was titled Rangeela Raja, which was released in 2019. Directed by Sikander Bharti, Govinda played double roles in the film. He starred alongside Mishika Chourasia, Anupama Agnihotri, and Digangana Suryavanshi.
