The chances of a film becoming a super hit at the box office increase with the presence of a big star. There have also been movies in the history of Bollywood that made huge money at the box office despite the absence of a big star. One such movie is Malamaal Weekly released in 2006.
This movie earned six times the budget at the box office regardless of the absence of well-known actors like Sanjay Dutt or Ajay Devgn and was also remade by Priyadarshan in Malayalam as Aamayum Muyalum.
Nevertheless, the makers of a film choose a hero wisely, considering who will be best suited for the particular role. They also predict whether the presence of that hero will contribute to the film’s success or failure. Priyadarshan’s 2006 movie Malamaal Weekly defied expectations upon its release. The budget of this film was Rs 6-7 crores and the earnings were up to Rs 42.76 crores.
The audience showered their love to the movie. The storyline as well as the contribution of the actors in the film made the audience their fans. Though according to the IMDB, it received a bad rating from the critics, it created a stir at the box office.
The Bollywood-comedy drama released in 2006 was directed by Priyadarshan starring Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Ritesh Deshmukh, Arbaaz Khan, Reema Sen, Sona Nair, Rajpal Yadav, Sudha Chandran, Govardhan Asrani and Shakti Kapoor in the lead roles.
Arbaaz Khan who is also well-known as a producer and an actor also contributed to the film’s success. His comic timing and acting skills were also an integral part.
Not only the actors but also the director of the film that is Priyadarshan’s role also made it a superhit at the box office as he is known for his proficiency in comedy. His direction helped craft a screenplay full of humour and engaging situations. Even the film’s soundtrack directed by Uttank Vora also featured catchy tunes that complemented the comedic nature of the film adding to its popularity.
Though several reviewers consider this film to be very similar to Waking Ned Devine 1998, the director claims that it was original.
