If you have ever read any of Agatha Christie’s suspense thrillers, you will be impressed to see how Vishal Bhardwaj has retained its elements of mystery and suspense in his latest show Charlie Chopra and The Mystery Of Solang Valley, which is inspired by the author’s The Sittaford Mystery.
The show begins with the murder of Brigadier Meherbaan Rawat (played by Gulshan Grover), which was even predicted by ‘Lady Ross’ during a community gathering. While everyone is shocked by the murder, Charlie Chopra (essayed by Wamiqa Gabbi) gets entangled in the case since her fiancé Jimmy, played by Vivaan Shah, is arrested as the prime suspect. As Charlie begins to investigate the death of the Brigadier, she learns that almost all of these Manali residents have their own dark secrets. How does she find the real murderer to save her fiancé? You must watch the show for it.
Wamiqa Gabbi’s portrayal of Charlie Chopra is impressive but it’s high time she stepped out of her comfort zone. In and as Charlie Chopra, she reminds us of her character in Jubilee, which was released earlier this year. Her portrayal of dialogues and being that uber-cool Punjab-speaking woman brings nothing new as far as her performance is concerned.
Besides Wamiqa, the show features a long list of talented actors including Neena Gupta, Ratna Pathak Shah, Naseeruddin Shah, Gulshan Grover, Lara Dutta, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Priyanshu Painyuli, Vivaan Shah, Imaad Shah and Paoli Dam. However, that’s where Vishal Bhardwaj disappoints all. Most of these actors are given very little screen time. You end up craving to watch more of Ratna Pathak and Neena Gupta. Even Naseeruddin Shah’s character looks very intriguing in episode one, but alas, he does not have enough dialogues or screen time to show his exceptional talent.
