BCCI secretary Jay Shah has provided an update on Hardik Pandya’s fitness and revealed that the board is monitoring him on a day-to-day basis in NCA. Pandya sustained an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh and was later ruled out of the tournament.
The flamboyant all-rounder missed the T20I series against Australia and also failed to make the cut for the South Africa tour.
However, the BCCI secretary has shared an update on his fitness and if everything goes right it will be a big relief for the Indian team.
Shah said that his development is being monitored at the National Cricket Academy.
“We are monitoring his day-to-day. He is at the NCA and he is working very hard. We shall let you know once he is back to full fitness,” Shah told reporters on the sidelines of WPL Auction.
“He could be fit even before the Afghanistan series,” he concluded.
Earlier, News18 CricketNext reported that an 18-week high-performance programme has been curated exclusively for him, which Pandya is following right now. The cautiously curated routine by the NCA — where every single day until March has been designed to suit a purpose — is being monitored to see how his body is reacting to different approaches ranging from cardio, strength training, functional training, rest and recovery.
Players like Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul had undergone similar personalised programmes during their injury lay-offs and it’s an approach the NCA has been taking to address long-term goals.
“It is not something new. Shreyas, Bumrah and KL underwent similar programmes during their long injury layoffs and the routine is designed keeping the next assignments in mind. Say for KL, wicket-keeping, subcontinent heat and everything was taken into account. Similarly, Bumrah was eased into cricket with Ireland T20Is before he went full throttle in the Asia Cup,” the source told News18 CricketNext.
Shah was also quizzed about no clarity regarding the captaincy for the upcoming T20 World Cup, to which he replied, “There is no need for clarity at the moment, we have to play in IPL and Afghanistan T20Is before the T20 World Cup which will be played in June,” he added.
