Have you ever thought about the origins of Garfield, the cat? Wondered how he came to meet his ‘owner’ Jon Arbuckle Andy or how pizza became a part of the story? If yes, the recently released trailer for Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment’s The Garfield Movie can provide some insights. Sony Pictures Entertainment unveiled the trailer of the film on November 13, 2023. Directed by Mark Dindal and featuring Chris Pratt as the voice of Garfield and Samuel L. Jackson as his long-lost father Vic, the upcoming film is set to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
For those unfamiliar, Garfield is an adorable and notorious, orange-coloured cat, renowned for his disdain for Mondays and his love for lasagna.
The trailer of The Garfield Movie begins with a sweet narration about the beginning of Garfield and Andy’s relationship, portraying a lost kitten encountering a lonely man at an Italian eatery. In the opening scenes, an adorable baby Garfield attempts to find shelter under a roadside shed during rain. Peeking into a window, he hopes to find refuge.
Cutely blinking his eyes, he spots a man, Andy, sitting alone in a restaurant, prompting him to ask, “You hungry, little guy?" Following this, Andy takes him in, offering some pepperoni from his pizza. Within moments, he is surprised to see the little cat devouring all his food.
Garfield sarcastically remarks in the subsequent scene, “And that’s how I adopted John," before he resumes eating his lasagna.
Later, seated at a table, expectedly filled with plates of lasagna, the cat humorously warns the audience about the impending messy eating. “I apologise in advance. The eating you’re about to see will not be pretty," says Garfield. “And if you have young children, this would be a good time for them to leave the room," he adds.

The narrative transforms into a father-son adventure from there on. Accompanied by their canine friend Odie, Garfield and his long-lost father embark on an adventurous heist, ensuring their stomachs are filled along the way.
The official synopsis of the film reads, “Garfield, the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat, is about to have a wild outdoor adventure. After an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father – scruffy street cat Vi – Garfield and his canine friend Odie are forced from their perfectly pampered life into joining Vic in a hilarious, high-stakes heist."
This installment in the Garfield franchise follows previous films featuring Bill Murray as the titular cat in 2004’s Garfield: The Movie and its 2006 sequel Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.
