Those issues are very much on agenda, the White House said when asked if “bulldozing slums in Delhi ahead of the G20 Summit” was brought up in the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden.
“What I will say is that the state of democratic governance both in the world and in each of our countries is a core facet of the US-India bilateral relationship. Both PM Modi and President Biden have said that, which means that those issues are very much on the agenda in every one of their conversations,” Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer said on Saturday.
Reports had earlier stated that authorities have already cleared many slums in Delhi like the one in Janta Camp. A report by Reuters stated that the demolitions started four months ago.
Reuters report also stated that hundreds of stray dogs that roam the streets of the national capital were being rounded up by authorities too. They were moved to shelters in the run-up to the G20 summit, the report quoted animal activists.
The G20 summit, the biggest ever gathering of world leaders in New Delhi, is being attended by US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida among others.
