An FIR was registered against AAP MLA from Okhla Amanatullah Khan for allegedly trying to block a JCB machine while a demolition drive by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) was on at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh on Sunday.
Delhi Police registered the FIR based on a complaint by the BJP-ruled civic body. The FIR stated that Khan attempted to block a JCB machine during the anti-encroachment drive at Shaheen Bagh. Police said a case has been booked against him and his supporters under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
According to police, the SDMC had planned a drive to raze illegal structures in the Shaheen Bagh area under the Okhla constituency. As soon as JCB bulldozers reached the spot to remove the encroachment, Khan’s supporters, as well as local residents, blocked the vehicle, police added.
Police said an argument also broke out between the SDMC officials and the AAP MLA and some of them even lay down in front of the JCB excavators. Soon, the number of local residents outnumbered the civic officials resulting in a failed anti-encroachment drive, police added.
The SDMC later lodged a formal complaint asking the Delhi Police to take strict action against those involved in causing an obstruction in government work, police said.
Protests erupted in the area as soon as the SDMC arrived for the demolition drive in Shaheen Bagh. The civic officials had to return without executing the exercise. Hundreds of people, including women, opposed the drive as bulldozers rolled into the area in presence of a massive number of police personnel. Protesters raised slogans against the civic body as well as the Centre and demanded that the action be stopped. Some of the women protesters even stood in front of the bulldozers to prevent the exercise.
