AGP did nothing to check corruption: Gogoi

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday criticised the Asom Gana Parishad for attempting to paint a corruption-free image of the party before the people. The Congress government in the state during the last 10 years of its rule had initiated several measures to curb corruption in the state and the efforts of the AGP government during its two terms is 'no comparison to our efforts', Gogoi said in a statement here.

"The AGP government may have appointed the Lokayukta in 1989, but it left the institution in the lurch during its second tenure in 1996 and it was the Congress-led government that appointed the 'Upa-Lokayukta' to curb the menace of

corruption in both their terms," he said.

The Congress-led government has referred 17 corruption cases to the Central Bureau of Investigation in comparison to only three cases by the erstwhile AGP-led government, Gogoi said.

"This clearly proves that the Congress-led government is more committed to provide a transparent and accountable government and will never compromise with corruption and other unlawful activities," the chief minister said.
