Chennai: Six months after it won the Assembly election, Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK was on Friday all set to sweep the civic polls, capturing all 10 corporations in the state and a majority of other civic bodies.
Counting of votes cast in the two-phased poll, held on October 17 and 19, began at 822 places across the state in the morning. AIADMK shot into the lead early into counting in a majority of the places and continued to extend its lead over rivals like DMK, DMDK and PMK.
The ruling party is all set to win a majority of the mayoral posts in municipal corporations, as well as those of the chiefs of municipalities and town panchayats.
Going by the trends, AIADMK is all set to clinch the 10 corporations in the state - Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Tiruchirapalli and Vellore.
AIADMK's Tuticorin candidate Sasikala Pushpa has already won the Tuticorin Mayor's election.
The elections saw all the major political parties in the state - AIADMK, DMK and Congress - going it alone while the second largest party in the state Assembly, DMDK, fought the elections with two Communist parties.
The DMDK, founded by actor-turned-politician A. Vijayakant, had fought the Assembly elections with the AIADMK and won 29 seats to become the second largest party in the 234 member assembly.
This time, however, things were different. Though Vijayakant and his wife campaigned across the state, the party fared poorly.
The Congress established leads in seven town panchayats. The BJP has also established leads in four town panchayats in the Kanyakumari district.
The polls will elect around 112,000 representatives.
On Thursday, the AIADMK had won the by-poll held in Tiruchirapalli West Assembly constituency.
