New Delhi: Senior BJP leaders will be in state capitals on Monday to lead demonstrations and protest marches for the party's nationwide strike against fuel price hike though the government made it clear there will be no rollback.
Senior leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) met in Delhi on Sunday to plan their strategy for the 'Bharat bandh' against rising prices and the fuel price hike. The meeting decided that BJP president Nitin Gadkari and former party president Rajnath Singh will lead the protest in New Delhi.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj will lead a protest in Bhopal while Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley and vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi will do so in Lucknow.
"The NDA asserts that it will not tolerate this premeditated conspiracy against the people of India by an insensitive government and Congress party," said a statement released by the alliance.
The government though ruled out reversing its decision to increase fuel prices and said a strike was "not a solution". In newspapers advertisements, the Ministry Of Petroleum And Natural Gas said the government will have to "bear a financial burden of Rs 53,000 crore" even after the price increase, and added that 80 percent of the country's crude oil requirements was met through imports.
"The volatility in international oil prices is bound to affect domestic prices," the advertisement read.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said his government had no intention of reversing its decision. "There is no question of a roll back," Mukherjee said in New Delhi.
