New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday slammed Law Minister Veerappa Moily for his statement on Central Vigilance Commissioner PJ Thomas' resignation. The party said that if the Supreme Court had quashed Thomas' appointment as the CVC then the question of him resigning does not exist.
"I don't know what the honourable Law Minister wants to say? How can there be a resignation from CVC PJ Thomas? If the Supreme Court has quashed the appointment, then question of him resigning does not exist. There is no need of a notice also. Thomas cannot even enter the office anymore," said BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad.
The Law Ministry on Friday said that a notification would be issued quashing the appointment of Thomas as the CVC.
"There is no need for CVC to resign as appointment has already been quashed. The notification now for new appointment will happen shortly," Moily said.
The BJP has been claiming that the Supreme Court verdict had vindicated the stand taken by Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, who had opposed the appointment of Thomas as the CVC.
The committee that appointed Thomas as the CVC comprised of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Sushma. While Singh and Chidambaram were in favour of Thomas, Sushma had vehemently opposed the Kerala cadre IAS officer's candidature.
The BJP had on Thursday said that the verdict had put a question mark over the credibility of the Prime Minister.
"The Prime Minister is personally culpable. The Supreme Court judgement is a landmark judgement. It's a huge blow to the credibility of the Prime Minister. He is personally culpable because he was party to the wrong decision," senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha had said.
