New Delhi: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday denied any rift with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying its alliance with the saffron party was a "winning combination" which will sweep the elections. "The alliance with the BJP is working very well. There were some confusion but it has been sorted out. Some candidates have withdrawn, some have been suspended, some have decided to go as Independents," Naidu said in an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN.
Speculation was rife last week that all was not well between the two allies after the TDP fielded its own candidates in three seats which it had allotted to the BJP. The TDP said it was disappointed as the BJP had fielded "weak" candidates from the three constituencies, one of whom was Naidu's sister-in-law Purandeswari. Reports say that the BJP threatened to cancel a joint rally between Narendra Modi and Naidu over the matter.
"They were having some constraints. Later they fielded better candidates. We are sure we will sweep the elections," Naidu today said.
Naidu also denied reports that he was opposed to holding joint rallies with Narendra Modi in Andhra Pradesh. "I am a development man. Modi is also a development man. I am against corruption. So is he. Modi is our choice for the national level. For Telangana, we chose our CM candidate. But at the national level, Modi is our choice," Naidu said.
Naidu also attacked the Congress saying it was a corrupt party which needed to be defeated. "The Congress is the enemy. We are fighting aganist Congress and corruption. The country is insecure. There is no leadership. There is corruption and people are fed up. The Congress will throw mud at others naturally," he said.
